McVaugh moved to Durango, Colorado in 1995, spending his first seven years in CDOT Region 5 performing both design and construction.  He was later promoted to Materials Engineer in Durango before becoming the Region Traffic Engineer in 2003.  He worked as the Traffic Engineer until the April of 2016, when he was promoted to the Region Transportation Director for Region 5, where he currently manages a staff of over 300 people in Southwest Colorado.  Mike and his staff support the highway system throughout 15 counties and two tribal nations in this area.

Notable accomplishments of Mike’s include guiding his outstanding team on successful awards of a TIGER Grant, FASTLANES Grant, two Rural Innovative Safety Grants, and most recently an ATCMTD Grant (Fiber) and FLAP Grant. The combination of these grants has created more than $91 million in additional transportation infrastructure investments for Southwest Colorado.

Mike has been happy to call the Durango area his home for more than 24 years. Spending time with his wife and two children is his greatest enjoyment. He likes to spend his free time in the outdoors year-round doing various activities, such as camping, riding his motorcycle, snowmobiling and hunting.
